Florida and California are home to the country’s two Space Force launch ranges. The Eastern Range operates from Cape Canaveral, and the Western Range operates from Vandenberg Space Force Base on the Central Coast. Engineers, contractors, and service members regularly move between the Space Coast and California’s aerospace corridor, from Vandenberg down to the El Segundo and Hawthorne area. Many of them ship a car rather than drive across the country.
Westbound carriers usually leave Florida on I-10 from Jacksonville or the Panhandle. Pickups on the Space Coast or in Orlando start on I-4 or I-95, and Tampa pickups start on I-75. From there, the route crosses the Gulf states and Texas, then reaches Southern California through Phoenix. Bay Area and Central Coast deliveries continue north on I-5 or US-101. The trip covers 2,500 to 2,900 miles and typically takes 7 to 10 days.
Ports and auctions mark both ends of this route. Port Tampa Bay and JAXPORT sit at the Florida end. On the California side, the Port of Hueneme in Ventura County is an important West Coast gateway for imported cars, with dedicated auto terminal land and vehicle processors next to the docks. Dealer stock moves between auction lots in Orlando and Tampa and lots in Riverside and the East Bay.
Westbound demand peaks in spring and summer, when families relocate for work. Navy transfers from Mayport and NAS Jacksonville to Naval Base San Diego add to the summer rush. The Sonoran Desert stretch is at its hottest from June through September, which is worth considering if you’re shipping an older car.
Safeeds Transport books your car with a licensed, insured carrier that runs westbound from the Southeast.
